“Sales people are coin operated"

I recently heard it on a podcast, and my grip on the steering wheel tightened. A lot.

It's a pathetic and lazy saying.

I hear it from people who are not in sales but think they know sales. Often it is non-sales leaders and CEOs who heard it from someone else (also not in sales). It is a lazy thought for people who don't truly get to know their salespeople. Often the tone is condescending.

For salespeople, money represents something deeper...

  • Winning

  • A new toy

  • Validation

  • Retirement

  • Recognition

  • A new house

  • Achievement

  • A gift for a loved one

  • Charitable donations

  • A special family vacation

And if you give them the chance to make more they like it. But if you screw around with their comp plan and the result is they earn less…well, they get mad. You know, just like... ALL HUMANS!

Thinking salespeople are coin-operated is for LAZY people. It's for people who don't want to get to know their sales teams. Don’t want to know their:

  • Frustrations

  • Ambitions

  • Dreams

  • Values

  • Hopes

  • Goals

  • Fears

The best CEOs and leaders make sure their salespeople are very well paid. They also get to know them on a deeper level. For it is then that they can help them achieve great things in their lives.

All leaders: don't be pathetic and lazy!

Time for a dad joke break...

What is the least spoken language in the world? Sign language.
